Are you preparing for a tooth extraction in Phoenix but do not know what it will feel like? It is common to be concerned or even a bit afraid when getting ready for any oral surgery, but the good news is that your local dentist is committed to ensuring you are safe and comfortable throughout your procedure. To help alleviate any concerns you might have about the removal of your tooth, the following article explains the step-by-step process and what you can expect to feel while your dentist works to safeguard your smile.

The Two Types of Extractions

Before we look at the process of removing an infected or damaged tooth, it is important that we discuss the different types of extractions: simple and surgical.

A simple extraction is performed when the tooth is fully erupted and visible above the gum line. A surgical extraction, on the other hand, is recommended when a tooth is impacted or below the gums. This typically requires more time and energy, as your dentist in Phoenix will need to use a more invasive approach to safely remove the tooth.

The Process of Removing a Tooth

No matter the type of extraction your dentist recommends, you can rest easy knowing that you will receive anesthesia to numb the tooth and the area surrounding it. This will keep you from feeling any pain throughout the procedure. If necessary, you and your dentist can also discuss the possibility of sedation to make your visit more comfortable.

Once you are fully numb, extraction forceps will be used to grasp the tooth and remove it from its socket. These are used to gently rock the tooth back and forth until it detaches from the ligament holding it in place. Dental elevators are also used between the tooth and surrounding bone. By moving it into the small space, the tooth will press against the bone, allowing the socket to expand and cause the tooth to detach.

Once the tooth is removed, your dentist will remove any infected tissue before using their fingers to compress the socket. Washing it out to remove any remaining debris, they will add gauze to the area to stop any bleeding. Finally, your dentist will close up the gum tissue around the extraction site.

To help control the bleeding, additional gauze is placed over the surgical site, and you will be instructed to bite down to hold it in place. You can use an ice pack or cold compress to reduce any swelling.

Throughout the process, you may feel a bit of pressure, but you do not have to worry about any pain. The anesthesia and sedation you receive will eliminate the potential for any discomfort, allowing you to remain relaxed throughout your appointment.

Remember, a tooth extraction is nothing to be fearful of. Your safety and comfort are your dentist’s top priorities. With this in mind, you can expect a positive and successful procedure.
